United We Stand

So what is this?

Immigration detention is the practice of incarcerating immigrants while they await a determination of thier immigration status ot potential deportation. The United States governemnt maintains the world's largest immigration detention system. ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforement. This agency runs the detention system and subcontracts the majority of detention space to county jails and private prison companies.

Immigrants held in these centers are people who are documented and undocumented immigrants. A lot of them have been in the U.S for years and are facing exile. The problems in these centers are that many are survivors of torture, asylum seekers and other vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and others are seriously ill. The conditions that they have to be in are harsh. Day after day, they are denied access to medical care, legal counsel, and family contact.
